The September shift: how to dress for three seasons in one day

September is the only month when you leave the house in a jacket and come home carrying it. It's 14 degrees in the morning, 26 at lunch, and by eight in the evening you need something over your top again. The August wardrobe no longer covers it, and the November one is far too early.

The answer isn't a new wardrobe. The answer is layering — and a few pieces that work through all three parts of the day.

1. The rule of three layers

The formula that works in September is simple: base + layer + outerwear you can take off easily. The base is what feels right at lunch. The layer is what you add in the morning. The outerwear is what you'll be carrying by the afternoon — which is why it has to be light.

Simple knit dress, art. YR2562 — 43 € (L–XL to 10XL–11XL). Knitwear is September's fabric: warm in the morning, breathable at noon. Add a shirt over it and the look changes completely.

2. Knitwear is the key texture

If you buy only one thing for September, buy knitwear. It does the work of two seasons at once.

Midi knit dress, art. YR2327 — 68 € (L–XL to 10XL–11XL). Long raglan sleeves with cuffs, a side slit, and a fabric sash sewn into the side seams — tie it at the front or the back depending on where you want the waist.

Ribbed turtleneck knit jumper, art. YR2310 — 38 € (L–XL to 10XL–11XL). A high neck is the cheapest way to stay warm without a coat.

The same YR2310 in a lighter colour; the rib reads differently in neutral and in dark.)

Basic jumper, art. LL430 — 27 € (2XL–3XL to 8XL–9XL). The most accessible piece here and the one you'll reach for most. Viscose with elastane — soft, never scratchy.

Mesh-panel jumper, art. TI1425 — 44 € (2XL–3XL to 6XL–7XL). The mesh detail takes knitwear into the evening, not just the office.

3. The shirt that changes everything

A shirt over a dress is the fastest outfit change in September. Open, it's a layer. Buttoned and tucked, it's a different garment entirely.

Satin shirt, art. YR2577 — 57 € (2XL–3XL to 10XL–11XL). Satin gives shine without formality — it works at work and after it.

Lace blouse, art. TI7325 — 26 € (6XL–7XL). Cotton with nylon, fine lace — the softer version of the same idea.

Below the waist: time for a long leg

Balloon jeans, art. LL432 — 41 € (2XL–3XL to 8XL–9XL). The volume leg is both the current cut and the comfortable one — nothing digs in when you sit.

Midi skirt, art. BV249 — 37 € (XL–2XL to 7XL–8XL). Midi length is the transition's rescue: it's not cold enough to give up skirts, but a bare knee already feels off.

Belted jumpsuit, art. VL1143 — 60 € (M–L to 5XL–6XL). One garment, a finished look — for mornings when you don't want to think.

5. The outerwear you end up carrying

In September, lightness is the whole point. You need outerwear that doesn't weigh you down when you're not wearing it.

Shell jacket, art. YR2430 — 84 € (L–XL to 10XL–11XL). Hood and pockets — for days when rain is likely but not certain.

The same YR2430 in another colour

Short coat, art. VS1640 — 59 € (XL–2XL to 5XL–6XL). Eco-cashmere: the substance of a coat, the weight of a cardigan.

The same VS1640 in a second colour.

6. For the occasions September brings

Christenings, anniversaries, weddings — occasion season starts right now.

Satin two-piece set, art. SV7178 — 78 € (S–L through 9XL–13XL — the widest size range in this edit). Two pieces, one finished look.

In short: what to buy first

  1. Knitwear — the basic jumper (art. LL430, 27 €) or the turtleneck (art. YR2310, 38 €).
  2. A shirt to layer — the satin one (art. YR2577, 57 €).
  3. Light outerwear — the short coat (art. VS1640, 59 €) or the shell jacket (art. YR2430, 84 €).

With those three, September is handled. Everything else is pleasure.
